This medal was probably mass-produced to celebrate the arrival of the new Archbishop of Melbourne, Thomas Jospeh Carr. The medal is inscribed in Gaelic 'one hundred thousand welcomes'. Car was Bishop of Galway, Ireland, and migrated to Victoria to assume his post. He served as Archbishop of Melbourne 1886 - 1917. The medal is inscribed 'CEADE MILLE FAILTHE' - one hundred thousand welcomes'.
