This is one of 959 photographs (or images) of the Exhibition Building collated by the Exhibition Trustees as a 10 volume pictorial history of the Exhibition Building spanning the years 1880 to 1985. The pictorial history was instigated by the centenary of the Exhibition Building in 1980 and forms part of a larger Royal Exhibition Building collection of documents, photographs, objects and research files.

The image depicts Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra and Exhibition Trustees Chairman Mr Freeman Strickland OBE moments after they unveiled the commemorative plaque in recognition of the Exhibition Buildings' centenary from the temporary dais errected at the eastern entrance to the Royal Exhibition Buildings as part of the centenary address. Seated on the dais behind them and visible in this image are Mrs Strickland, Mrs JC Elden, wife of the Exhibition Trustees Director, and the Hon Norman Lacy, MP. Behind them a banner hung across the entrance way reads 'The Melbourne International Centenary Exhibition', however the dates also appearing on the banner are not visible in this image. There is a printed caption below the photograph.
