Letter spike made by a patient in a psychiatric hospital in Victoria Australia, circa 1850. It was probably used in the wards or offices to organize paperwork.

Physical Description

Letter spike with a heavy base of lead and a curved and bent copper spike. Appears to be handmade. The base has an uneven circular shape and a rough, dark grey surface. There is one concave step up to a flat circular plateau. The spike section is threaded through a hole in the centre of the base that has then been welded to the underneath section.
