Plaiting is a technique that some of the artists at Gunbalanya have incorporated into their work. This coiled oval basket by Labidja Dirdi has been made with bands of dyed pandanus and the handle contains a feature solid yellow plait.

Labidja Dirdi was a senior artist who spent time in her youth at both Gunbalanya and Goulburn Island. Labidja worked mainly in the coiling technique, her forms include lidded baskets and large carrying baksets. Her favourite colour combinations were hot pink and yellow.

Physical Description

Oval basket, coiled, with bands of dyed pandanus (purple and yellow) and a band of open coiling. It has a three part fixed handle with yellow plait in the centre and coiled sections on either side that have alternating blocks of colour of purple and yellow.
