Anzac Day marks the anniversary of Australia’s first major involvement in World War I: an attack by Australian, New Zealand and British forces on the Gallipoli Peninsula of Türkiye. The campaign was waged stubbornly for eight brutal, bitter months, ending in failure. The terrain was too steep and the Turkish defences too strong to overcome. Anzac Day is now a day of national remembrance, when Australians reflect on the meaning and impacts of war.
To celebrate World Book Day we are highlighting some special items from our library’s Rare Book Collection. The Museums Victoria Library dates back to the 1850s and is one of Victoria’s historic library collections. The Rare Book Collection specialises in 18th and 19th-century zoology, palaeontology and geology.
Rainbow Threads is an exhibition that celebrates the diversity of styles and stories that live within the Museum’s clothing and textile collections. Showcasing a selection of recent acquisitions, they reflect the inclusive nature of museums in the 21st-century in both the objects we collect and the narratives that we tell. Behind the glitz and the glamour on show, are stories of struggle, determination and triumph that deserve to be told.
