  • Rock Description

"Ash-grey volcanic tufa containing small, dark blackish-brown, highly viscular, lapilli". Derived from older Quaternary eruptions of Monte Somma and employed as a useful building stone, but as the hardness of the lapilli is very widely different from that of the grey ash, it is necessary to cover the face of the walls with mortar and wash, otherwise the stone wears into holes after prolonged exposure to the atmospheric influences."
