Other Details: Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals. This medal was issued by the Town of Warrnambool, and names W.J. Hickford as Mayor. Hickford was Mayor from 1895 to 1897. Warrnambool became a Town in 1883, and in the last decade of the twentieth century, when this medal was issued, it finally was connected by rail and the Merri River Water Supply Scheme at last provided a reliable water supply. Warrnambool became a City in 1918.

Jugate busts, young & old Queen Victoria; around, QUEEN VICTORIA'S 60TH YEAR OF REIGN * 1837 TO 1897 * (stops on either side of date in form of dots). Mint name, STOKES & SONS in tiny letters on rim below date.

Reverse Description

At centre within wide rim Royal Arms with lion and unicorn supporters above scenes: left sailing ship; right, wheat sheaf and rising sun around on broad rim, * TOWN OF WARRNAMBOOL * W.J. HICKFORD, MAYOR
