Schematic drawing of a13 inch astrograph telescope, by Howard Grubb, Dublin, Ireland.

The international Astrograph Project, or Carte du Ciel, was proposed in Paris in 1887, and proposed an international collaborative project to photograph and chart the heavens. Howard Grubb quickly developed schematic designs for photographic telescopes suitable for the project, with the hope of getting commissions from Britain and its colonies. This sketch probably dates from 1887, when the project was in its infancy. Grubb's firm would make 13 inch photographic refractors for Mexico, Greenwich, Melbourne, Sydney, Cape Town and Perth, between 1889 and 1897.
