Opperman covered 565 miles in 39 hours and 42 minutes, breaking the previous record of George McLeod of 47 hours, 46 minutes and 20 seconds. The inaugural cycling record between Sydney and Melbourne was set in 1910 by J. Salvann. at a time of 78 hours and 31 minutes.

Other cyclists that cut this record down included Teddy Pearson and L. Cecil.
