Summary

Alston 20 sail, direct acting windmill, by James Alston of Warrnambool, Victoria, about 1890.

This windmill is one of the earliest manufactured by Alston. It uses unusual flat sails and a direct acting eccentric pump drive mechanism patented in 1889 (see Vcitorian Patents 6489 and 6780). Alston later produced a version of this windmill with a geared pump drive mechanism which was widely sold until about 1900.

This windmill was used in the Rushworth district until 1959.

The windmill is comprised of several parts that include a tower, sails and tail vane.
