Horse brass. Pirate within a horse shoe. Type: cast brass. Date: After 1936.

The horse brass is most likely to be based on the character of Joss Merlyn in the famous novel "Jamaica Inn" published in 1936 by Daphne de Maurier. The novel was based on the "Jamaica Inn", a free house in Cornwall, which was built in 1750 and had a past association with smugglers.

"Jamaica Inn the place and the novel are so entwined in Cornish myth it is easy to forget that it is actually a story". (Review of "Jamaica Inn", by A. Willmore 2002: It is therefore likely that this horse brass was a souvenir based on this location and the novel which made it famous.
