This badge was made circa 1968 - 1970 and used in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, circa 1968 - 1973. It was worn by the donor during anti-Vietnam war and anti-conscription rallies. The donor was a student at Monash University between 1968 and 1973, and was involved in student politics, including membership of the militant Students for a Democratic Society. The object was probably produced by Students for a Democratic Society at Monash University. The slogan 'Serve the People' originated from a speech by Mao Zedong in 1944 and became one of the core principles of the Chinese Communist Party. In the 60s and 70s, it was widely adopted by socialist organisations all over the world.
