Ilford X-ray cassette, circa 1950, used for developing x-ray film at Aradale, a mental health hospital in Ararat, Victoria Australia. Used in Ward F8.

Physical Description

X-ray cassette is a stain steel tray with thick, grooved sides and with flat, hinged lid, re-inforced by thick metal frame with diagonal bars and swivelling shaft across centre which locks into catches on each side of base. Lid has leather strip handle and hinges. Lined with blue felt, onto which was glued a "tungstate screen" backing sheet (looks like heavy cardboard). Similar sheet is glued to base and between 2 lies green x-ray film. Cassette is in an envelope-shaped green vinyl case, labelled F8 Aradale.
