Metal fireguard used at a mental health hospital in Victoria, Australia, circa 1930. The fireguard prevented patients from burning themsleves on open fireplaces.

Physical Description

Fireguard is very solid with open-backed metal case which has vertical bars 6cm apart. It is oblong in shape with rounded corners and top sloping slightly up toward the back. There is a door in the middle of the front with a fitting for bolt and lock. Fireguard would be placed against the wall in which the fireplace was set. There are holes in back of framework that would be used to bolt fireguard to the wall. Fireguard is painted cream.
