Special Pass issued to Joseph Hampton for the Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition (MCIE); which opened at the Exhibition Building on 1 August 1888 and closed on 31 January 1889. Joseph Hampton was a South Australian Detective who worked as part of the Exhibition Police force for most of the Exhibition, returning to Adelaide just before it closed in January 1889. During the MCIE one hundred police were employed daily to guard the Exhibition and its contents.

During the 1880s and 1890s Hampton often served as the special representative of the South Australian Police Department at interstate exhibitions and big gatherings. A well known and respected member of the police force in South Australia, Hampton was acknowledged on his departure from Melbourne for his excellent service. Shortly after the exhibition opened Hampton, along with Detective M'Kenna from Western Australia, assisted in the arrest of an exhibition attendant who stole a bottle of Maraschino from the stall of Messrs. Kronheimer and Co., in the German Court.
