Summary

Copy of a medal depicting John Kendal. The original medal in the manner of Niccolo Fiorentino was cast in 1480. This two piece electrotype copy was made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. This two piece electrotype copy was made circa 1881 at British Museum by Robert Ready (see BMC Reg 1866,0920.1 where a second medal in the BM is discussed - found in Knaresborough forest (Thoresby's Leeds, 1816, Ap. 131), which is probably the original for this copy). This medal commemorates the recruitment of men to assist Knights of St John of Jerusalem in resisting the Turk.

Bust facing right in armour; on his breast the cross of the Knights of St. John, head bare, hair straight and long; around, IO . KENDAL . RHODI . TVRCVPELLERIVS.

Reverse Description

Arms of Kendal; around, TEMPORE . OBSIDIONIS . TVRCHORVM . MCCCCLXXX (translation: At the time of the siege by the Turks, 1480.)
