Copy of a medal of Alfonso, Marquis of Montecchio. The original medal, by Pasterino Posterini (Pastorino of Siena), was made in 1575. This Electrotype copy made circa 1881 by Robert Ready. The original medal from the collection of George III (Reg: G3,FerrM.61) was exhibited in the King's Library of the British Museum in 1881 and is No. 245 in the catalogue of that exhibition. It is thought that this electrotype was produced in association with that exhibition and publication and acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria where it was displayed in the late 1880s. The original medal is cast lead, this electrotype is copper plated and toned. The date was read as 1877 for the 1881 catalogue.

Alfonso was the illegitimate son of Alfonso I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara by Laura Dianti. In 1523 he was given Montecchio and turned it into a feudal inheritance.
