Recipe Book titled 'Reader Recipes, issued by The Bendigo Advertiser, in the late 1950s - early 1960s.
This is a collation of some of the recipes that were published each Saturday by the Bendigo Advertiser in the popular Reader Recipe section of the paper, a section that was inaugurated in July 1954. Readers had requested the publication of the recipes in a 'handy book form', and this booklet was the result. It represented the first cookery book comprised of reader submitted recipes in Bendigo. It was printed by the Argus and Australasian Limited.
The booklet includes recipes for cakes, biscuits, children's party fare, meatless dishes, jams and chutneys, candies, bread and scones, desserts, fish, savouries, and meats, and also provides tips on cake icing and bottling fruit.
The booklet features advertisements from local Bendigo traders, and features an introduction by 'Toora', who was presumably the newspaper's Reader Recipe section's journalist.
Advertisements included Myer's, promoting Rayburn cookers; McKenna's, promoting kitchen settings; Ron Meurer BGE stoves; Roy Raggatt's bread; Mayfair ham; Ritemp stoves sold by Hesse Bros; Hanro woolen clothing; Stilwells, promoting household goods; Westinghouse appliances from HQ Radio Service; The Bendigo Gas Company; kitchen fittings from Hume & Iser Pty Ltd; St George stoves at L. Fawssett & Co; Sandhurst Dairies; Modern Supplies appliance and hardware merchants; Homecrafts Pty Ltd home appliances; CH Jeffrey Pty Ltd Bakery; and appliances from Bendigo Rural Electrics.
76 page booklet bound with two metal staples. It has a glossy front and back cover, featuring red print on a yellow background. The inside cover has blue print on yellow background. The inside pages have black print on white pages, and include some black and white photographic reproductions and line drawings.
