Summary

Circular mat, coiled, made by Louise Nganjmirra with close bands of dyed pandanus (purple, orange, green, yellow) and undyed pandanus. During mission times mats were made flat, not conical, in order to render them more saleable in the south. Early mats were twined with plain pandanus but later in the 1950's when colour appeared in baskets it would have also been introduced to the mats.

Louise Nganjmirra lives at Kudjekbinj, an outstation, and produces coiled baskets that contain highly geometric patterning, including step and diamond designs.
