Summary

This coiled bucket basket by Betty Namarnyilk has horizontal bands and colour blocks of dyed pandanus. The coiled button handle is attached in the middle of the bag on opposite sides and called kaberlmankan, in reference to the way the handle moves from side to side. Handles are a key feature of baskets made during mission times and continue into the present and they are divided into two main categories; those that move and those that do not.

Betty Namarnyilk's baskets often incorporate open structural zig zag forms within the coiling. Her work is featured in Object #45, 2004.
