Summary

This oval shaped basket by Jill Nganjmirra has been coiled, with horizontal bands and open coil stich of dyed pandanus (pink, yellow, green) and undyed pandanus. The way the women work with the natural dyes in the Gunbalanya area is one of the distinguishing factors that seperates their work from others in Arhnem land. There is one coiled and plaited handle, which is sometimes called kunberl or berl, and which comes from the influence of missionaries on weaving styles.

Jill Nganjmirra's main artistic practice is fibre but she is also a painter using Arches paper and bark. She was Assistant Curator of the exhibition Twined Together: Kunmadj Njalehnjaleken.
