Summary

This vibrant open coiled basket has horizontal bands of dyed and undyed pandanus. The two sided, coiled handles are attached in the middle of the basket on opposite sides and join together at the top. The basket has been made using wet season dyes. Colour is very important to the artists at Injalak and all materials used to produce the colours are derived from natural sources in the artists own environment.

Canoe basket, coiled, with horizontal bands of dyed (purple and pink) pandanus and undyed pandanus. It has two long rigid coiled handles that emerge from the last coil bundle at the rim on opposite sides.

Stephanie Nadjamerrek makes consistently small, tightly coiled baskets. Her trademark style of work often employs chopping colour with alternating two stiches of different colours. Her work is represented at the National Gallery of Australia.
