Summary

Colour photograph of the Media Room's telephone bay, located in the Media Centre in the Western Annexe, Royal Exhibition Building, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held between 30 September and 7 October 1981.

This is one of 959 photographs (or images) of the Exhibition Building collated by the Exhibition Trustees as a 10 volume pictorial history of the Exhibition Building spanning the years 1880 to 1985. The pictorial history was instigated by the centenary of the Exhibition Building in 1980 and forms part of a larger Royal Exhibition Building collection of documents, photographs, objects and research files.

Description of Content

View of the Media Room Telephones situated in the Media Centre in the Western Annexe, Royal Exhibition Building, during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held at the Royal Exhibition Building in 1981. Two rows of desks occupy the centre of the room, each with a white telephone placed upon it. Red, steel tube framed chairs are located at most desks, while wrapping around the walls of the room are Telecom telephone booths. A television has been placed on top of the telephone booths at the far end of the room.

Significance

Ten photographic albumbs maintained by the Exhibition Trustees' provide an invaluable visual record of the history, use, changes and restoration of the Exhibition Buildings prior to the building being recognised with a World Heritage Listing in 2004.
