This is one of 959 photographs (or images) of the Exhibition Building collated by the Exhibition Trustees as a 10 volume pictorial history of the Exhibition Building spanning the years 1880 to 1985. The pictorial history was instigated by the centenary of the Exhibition Building in 1980 and forms part of a larger Royal Exhibition Building collection of documents, photographs, objects and research files.

Seated on the dais behind him are his wife, Mrs Strickland, the Hon Angus Ogilvy, Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, the Permier of Victoria, Rupert "Dick" Hamer, and his wife, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress and members of the Exhibition Trustees executive committee. Also visible in the background are the wife of Exhibition Trustee Rodney Davidson. Behind them a portion of the banner hung across the entrance way which reads 'The Melbourne International Centenary Exhibition', with the dates 1880 and 1980 in the upper corners, is visible.
