Summary

This rasp is made from a section of skin from a stingray and used to smooth the surface of carvings and other things made of wood.

A section of skin from the back of a stingray wrapped around and secured to a piece of wood.

Significance

This is a very rare object and at least one other is found in the museum's collection which was collected by Baldwin Spencer in 1912 at Oenpelli from Gaagadju people. This example has excellent documentation making it extremely important culturally and historically.
