The shells are carried around by women strung on vegetable fibre string. They are used to grate or peel djitama, a round yam or "wild potato" that is boiled, then grated and soaked overnight before being cooked.

Physical Description

Twenty eight land snail shells strung on a single length of vegetable fibre string.

Local Name

This is a very rare example of an ephemeral object made for a specific purpose that would normally then be discarded after one use. Very few collectors found items like this of interest.
