Ornamental ceramic dessert plate, possibly German, sold as a souvenir of Melbourne featuring an image of the 'General Post Office Melbourne'. It is one of a series of desert plates produced for sale at the time of the Centennial International Exhibition held in Melbourne from 1 August 1888 to 31 January 1889. Another plate in the series features an image of the Exhibition Building.

Physical Description

Ornamental ceramic dessert plate, no maker's mark. The plate is a light pink which is not uniform across the object with white showing through in some places. It has gold decorations in the form of a an elaborate cut-out border with hand-applied gold paint representing looped ribbon. The plate shows some sign of use, due to cutlery marks.
