War Cross medal designed by L. Suue and the French sculptor André Rivaud, it was first issued by Greece in 1917.

The medal was established (unofficially) by the Venizelist "National Defence" Government on 28 February 1917 but was later confirmed by Royal Decree on 31 October, shortly after the entry of the whole of Greece in World War I. It was originally awarded for heroism in wartime to both Greeks and foreign allies and later for general war service.

Obverse Description

Medal consists of a vertical sword on a circular laurel wreath supported by a horizontal plaque bearing ancient Greek text.

Reverse Description

Reverse text in Ancient Greek reads: "GREECE / 1916 - 1917".
