The party was founded in 1989 and registered in 1990 by Rodney and Robyn Spencer, the parents of actor Jesse Spencer, it was deregistered as a political party by the Australian Electoral Commission in December 2005 and ceased to exist in 2008. The AAFI regularly stood candidates at both state and federal level, but never won a seat.
