Edge Description



The dangerous waters of the Irish Sea which surrounded Douglas Bay led Sir William Hillary to build a refuge for sailors washed overboard in storms. Situated upon Conister Rock in Douglas Bay it took the form of a small granite castle which was kept stocked with fresh water and bread. Designed by John Welch, the Tower of Refuge was completed in 1832. It is depicted on the reverse of this coin.
