Contractor's team cutting chaff at 611-613 Doveton Street North, Ballarat, using John Fowler & Co 8 nominal horsepower single-cylinder steam traction engine, serial no.8841 of 1900, driving a Cliff & Bunting 'New Reliance' chaff cutter. The traction engine was owned by Richard Barry of Dana Street, Ballarat. The stack of oaten hay in the background was estimated to be approximately 120 tons prior to cutting. This team, working two to three hours a day could produce 200 bags of chaff. The contributor's oldest brother, Tom Smith, is pictured feeding the hay into the chaff cutter under the roof in the centre of the photo. Bill Smith, as an 11 year old boy, is depicted on the haystack on the left of photograph.
