Community gathering in McCombe's Hall, Warracknabeal, Victoria, in 1910.

A few years later, on 30 September 1916, a public meeting was convened at the hall by the shire president, Cr. Jas. Mclntyre, in response to a request from the National Referendum Council (constituted by the Prime Minister, Billy Hughes) to work for the success of the Government proposal in favour of compulsory service abroad. The meeting, to form a committee to conduct a campaign in the district, attracted a large crowd (Warracknabeal Herald, 3 Oct 1916). A further conscription referendum meeting was held there on 21 October.
