Other Details: Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897 was celebrated the great enthusiasm throughout the British Empire. It prompted many Australian local governments to issue commemorative medals. This copper medal was issued by the City of Ballarat, and names Alexander Bell as Mayor. Ballarat was proclaimed a town in 1852. It was a municipality by 1855, a borough by 1863 and a city in 1870.
