This banner was painted in 1912 by Nelson Wood for the Bakers' Carters' Association, South Australian Branch.

Physical Description

Linen tabby weave fabric, natural on recto, dyed Venetian red on verso. Vertical centre French seam machine sewn. All sides have been turned under and edged with gold brocade style 20 mm wide binding tape, machine stitched. " Yellow wool bullion style fringe with copper wire incorporate into twist edge, hand sewn to bottom edge recto side. 11 brass eyelets along top edge as hanging mechanism, one in each lower corner. Top edge eyelets have loops of gold cordage threaded through and sewn. Recto: Black background with shields in top corners. Text in gilt lettering. Central shield of stylised flora border with bakers horse and carts in street scene. Signed lower left. Verso: Text dominates with central arrangement of loaves of bread, signed lower right.
