Summary

This medal was awarded by the Commonwealth of Australia to mothers and widows to mark the death of a child or husband on active service during World War II. Additional bars bearing a star were issued if further losses occurred.

Following Federation, the Commonwealth assumed responsibility for national defence. During and after World War I, the Commonwealth assumed some responsibility for returned servicemen, including funding the construction of houses for returned soldiers and their families.
