Copper One Penny Token, minted by Thomas Stokes, Melbourne. Issued by Alfred Davies, Pawnbroker, Fremantle, 1865. This was the first issue of a token in Western Australia.

Physical Description

A round copper token (31 mm diameter) with the name, address and business of the issuer: Alfred Davies, High St. Fremantle, Pawnbroker. The reverse features a swan swimming to left with wings raised with the legend WESTERN AUSTRALIA 1865.

Obverse Description

ALFRED DAVIES / PAWNBROKER / HIGH ST FREMANTLE the first and last lines being curved.

Reverse Description

Swan swimming on water to left with raised wings; above, WESTERN AUSTRALIA; below, 1865 (struck before the die chipped)
