David II introduced this denomination to Scotland following the model of Edward III of England. The groat was a 4 pence coin.

Obverse Description

At centre within beaded circle and a broken tressure of six arches, crowned head of the King facing left with sceptre at left; around, + DAVID DEI GRA REX SCOTORVM

Reverse Description

Long cross with five pointed mullet voided with cinquefoils in each angle; around in two concentric circles, inner, VILLA EDINBVRGh; outer DNS PTECTOR MS Z LIBATOR MS (translation, God is my protectopr and my redeemer)
