Although the groat was rated at 4 pence in 1357, its rate in Scottish pence increased in steps over time from 6 pence to 18 pence. Heavy coinage issue.

Obverse Description

At centre within beaded circle and broken tressure of arches, crowned head of the King facing; around, + ROBERTVS DEI GRA REX SCOTTORVM

Reverse Description

Long cross with three pellets in each angle; around in two concentric circles, inner, VILLA EDINBVRGh; outer, DNS PTECTOR MS LIBATOR MS (translation, God is my protector and my redeemer)
