A Geiger-Muller tube is a gas filled cold cathode diode. It is operated at a voltage just below the breakdown voltage so that any ionising particle will trigger breakdown which is detected and extinguished by the attached electronic circuitry.

Metal cylinder open at one end with a loose cover. Remnants of widow are visible. The other end has exhaust tip and a wire pin connected to electrode inside.
