Dial pattern rain gauge, made by Thomas Gaunt, Melbourne & London. Zinc funnel with square brass rim. Used at Melbourne Observatory.

Used to measure the amount of rainfall.

Physical Description

Outer case is zinc with glass front & setting hand. Dial is graduated in divisions of 0.01 in. to 1 in., with smaller dial to 12 in. Mechanism consists of a copper bucket with open ends divided into 2 parts & pivoted about its central point. Bucket tilts when 0.01 in. rain has been collected. An escapement advances a toothed wheel & index hand moves over the dial at each step.
