Singer 'Family A' model sewing machine, made in New York in 1859. This machine was bought by the donor's family in Australia in 1863 or 1864.

Physical Description

Lock- stitch type Singer 'Family A' model sewing machine on cast iron stand. The machine is fitted with reciprocating (or vibrating) shuttle. The stand has a foot operated pedal which drives a large leather belt that runs the machine.The machine is painted with black glossy enamel paint and there is a worn design in blue. There is a reel of cotton on the machine which is of wood with yellow thread on it.
