Heiloscope made by Ertel & Son, Munich. The helioscope is a telescope for viewing the sun without injury to the eyes, by means of blackened glass on mirrors that reflect only a part of the light. Used at Melbourne Observatory.

Physical Description

Base has 3 lateral legs with levelling screws. On top of base is rotating wye to support telescope that is rotated on longitudinal axis by worm drive at eyepiece end. At objective end is frame which alters angle of mirrors to reflect only part of light from sun so that the sun can be viewed without injury to the eyes.
