Magic lantern readings in the form of a booklet, entitled '"Old King Cole" or The Doings of the Drink'. These readings are a temperance lecture for use during a magic lantern presentation. The temperance lecture enumerates the evils of alcohol consumption as it affects the individual, family, community and the British nation, both at home and in its dominions.

The lecture notes are grouped under the numbered slide titles and would be read as the corresponding slide was displayed.

Originally a set of thirty six magic lantern slides accompanied the booklet.

This booklet is part of the Francis Collection of pre-cinematic apparatus and ephemera, acquired by the Australian and Victorian Governments in 1975. David Francis was the curator of the National Film and Sound Archive of the British Film Institute as well as being a co-founder of the Museum of the Moving Image in London, which was operational between 1988 and 1999.
