Shield awarded to winner of annual cricket competition between teams fielded by Victoria's Mental Hospitals' patients. Used: Victoria, Australia, circa 1957 - 1965. Cricket was one of the recreational activities offered to Victorian psychiatric hospital patients and staff.

Physical Description

Brown wooden sports shield, irregular in shape. Dull, grey-metal plaque has been screwed and glued to centre. This features relief image of batsman, wicketkeeper and fielder. Above and below plaque are two further grey metal plaques, screwed and glued to shield. Down each edge of shield are six small plaques engraved with names of winning teams for each year between 1957 and 1964-5. Metal plating has worn off these 12 plaques. Three plaques remain blank. Shield hangs from grey metal hanger screwed to top of reverse side.
