Contractual agreement for scaffolding of the exhibition building, between David Mitchell (builder) and John Mather (interior decorator), dated 26 January 1880.

This document was donated by the daughter of Jim Gorman, manager of the Mitchell Family Estate 'Doonside'.

David Mitchell (1829-1916) won the contract to build the permanent section of the Exhibition Building in 1879. John Mather (circa 1848-1916) was a Scottish-born Australian artist responsible for the interior decoration at the Exhibition Building in 1880. He was a founding member of the Victorian Artists' Society, and the Society's president in 1893-1900, 1906-08 and 1911. He was a member of the Felton Bequests' Committee from 1905 until his death, and in this role was a strong advocate for the promotion of Australian art.
