Brooches or pins are the most common item of jewellery worn with traditional Latvian costumes. They are used to fasten the neck opening of a shirt, or to keep a shawl in place. They are usually made in silver and may be ornamented with different coloured stones or glass beads. Traditionally the more jewellery that is worn with a folk costume, the wealthier the owner.
