Summary

Badge with the slogan 'Free the Refugees', which was issued by the Refugee Action Collective, circa 2002. The slogan 'free the refugees' was used as a standard by the Refugee Action Collective Victoria (RAC) for its badges when it was established in late 2001. The Refugee Action Collective grew out of a national grassroots protest movement in response to the treatment of refugees and mandatory detention. First established in 2000, it gained momentum during the Tampa crisis in August 2001. The Victorian branch met weekly on Tuesday nights at Trades Hall, organised protest rallies, sit-ins, media campaigns as well as participated in sympathetic activities organised by other groups.
