Receipt for Mr Brill and Mr Salter, dated 24 Jan 1940. This receipt for 13 shillings was issued by the Department of the Interior for cablegram costs. This receipt relates to the letters dated 22/12/1939 and 9/1/1940. Brill and Salter migrated to Australia from Austria, fleeing Vienna just before the German annexation of Austria in 1938. Salter had applied for residency in Australia 5 months before leaving Vienna but could not wait for approval as he was in danger of being arrested.

When he arrived in Brisbane he found that his application for residency had been rejected. With the help of William Maloney, a Member of Federal Parliament who befriended him, Salter was finally able to obtain permits for himself and his friend Brill, and later for his parents and fiancee.
