J.H. Knipe (1828-95) was a developer in the Mentone area in the 1880s. He initially called the area 'Dover Slopes'. Knipe was also an an estate agent and councillor in what later became Surrey Hills, and he coined the latter name.

Knipe has also been busy in other areas. He was named as a councillor for Parhran 1866-69, and a John Knipe is named as the land speculator who named Clifton Hill.
