R. S. Newall & Co. were manufacturers of wire rope. In 1840 the company patented a method for making wire rope with a soft core. This technology was applied to the manufacture of submarine telegraph cables. Another manufacturer supplied the company with a cable core consisting of a conductor encased in insulation. Newall's then wrapped the core in protective metal wires. The company's first submarine telegraph cable was the 1851 cable across the English Channel. They made their last cable in 1870.
